Here in Orange County while it's count down to your child's last day of school, you may be already packing the house and car with all sorts of out door fun! Here is something to take a serious second look at, even if you're the faint of heart, because no matter who you are, protecting your skin from the suns damaging rays is this important. Having the basic knowledge about what skin cancer is, and what it looks like, can be one of the best insurance you won't forget your spf again.
It's as simple as A, B, C, and D. A is for asymmetry, growths with irregular shapes, and different-looking halves should be seen by a dermatologist right away. B is for border, moles with irregular, notched, or scalloped borders are a cause for concern. C is for color, notice if growths have uneven coloring or a variation of colors. And D is for diameter, if a growth even "beauty marks" have exceeded 5 millimeters, this is a sign to visit your dermatologist for a closer examination.

Something Material About Thread

If you haven't already heard, The Thread Show came and went without a hitch, this past Sunday, from the back lots of The Lab shopping center in Costa Mesa, Orange County. The weather looked grim earlier on but the sun shined through bright and strong just in time, ensuring a day of shopping and mingling with the local designers who proudly shared their wares from lavish to down right organic jewelry and accessories, garments, furniture, art, eco-friendly hand bags to baby clothes. Many of the clothing vendors displayed their garments in a familiar "swap-meet" manner, so the digging through rolling racks and piles of "mix and match" on tables wasn't too enticing. Otherwise vendors such as Shaune' Young, owner of Exfolatte Body Scrub, who stood by an eloquent free standing sink along with a glass pitcher of water ready to share her luxurious coffee face and body scrub, to any and all passerby's was a real sweet treat. This impressive scrub literally acts as both an astringent as well as an exfoliate while the unique ingredients detoxifies and facilitates the breakdown of cellulite and reduction of varicose veins! Also if you were willing to wait a half hour or so you could have joined the long list of patrons who enjoyed getting their nails done by Atlas Studio pro nail techs. who were demonstrating their 3D nail art for only $5-$15 depending on what you desired. If you want to "bling"-up your nails, glam, animate, or just polish them up, make your appointment with Yoko Ono, nail and eye lash expert, or any of their talented crew at Atlas Studio in Costa mesa. This next mention may not be beauty related, but the fact that this up and coming company of hand made eco-friendly accessories, White Apple Threads, creates the most adorable and functional messenger, duffel, diaper bags, to totes was definitely a beautiful find! From exquisitely impressive soft locally sourced, recycled coffee sacks lined with a sundry of eye catching redeemed fabrics, anyone will enjoy toting around these totes.
Overall The Thread Show proved to be a shoppers delight, whether it was the music, the food, the art, or the wares you came for, all together the people and what they shared with Orange County that day was a purely pleasurable event.

THREAD Show, the multi-city shopping event promoting emerging designers and artists, is traveling to San Diego, San Francisco, Orange County, Los Angeles and Seattle on the 2011 tour. At each show, THREAD will showcase 100 of the top independent designers in each market, as well as complementary music, art, food and entertainment from locals. In 2011, attendees can expect new interactive spaces with the additions of a DIY Lounge, Nail Bar, Live Style Series, THREAD Well Lounge and a Man Cave complimentary with entrance to the event.

“By allowing shoppers to skip the third-party retailer, THREAD gives trend-setters an opportunity to meet the designers face-to-face, feed the local economy, be kind to the environment and ensure products are locally-made and ethically produced,” explains THREAD Show spokesperson, Danielle Gano. “This one-on-one connection also allows designers to get direct feedback from their consumers and lifts the veil for consumers to know exactly where their products come from.”

For eight years, THREAD Show has encouraged cities across the country to shop local by presenting a curated showcase of the most skilled and creative designers in each market. In addition to shopping prices lower than retail from the top independent designers, attendees will enjoy a Style Lounge, live music, seasonal trend showcases, a pop-up local art gallery, photo booths, live screen printing and giveaways all day. There is a very unique product out there Orange County, that seems to be more popular with the local athletes than what it was originally intended for. A facial cleansing product by the name of Albolene. On the way out the door? Did you find time this morning to do your hair, apply deodorant? Put on your shoes? Like many women living in Orange County, you may be juggling multiple daily responsibilities. Whether you lead a household full of children, a husband, and a job on top of that, or just whirling your own personal life obstacles day in and day out, there may be days you lose track of yourself on the way out the door.

One simple strategy to ensure you have what you need by the time you turn the key in the ignition, adjust your rear view mirror, gasp in horror when you realize you still have your bath towel on your head, is to pack an emergency touch up kit and have it ready and waiting in your purse, handbag, tote, baby bag, computer bag, what have you.

This small zippered bag, shouldn't take up much space. Look for something about 5 by 7 in size and preferably translucent so that you can find an item more efficiently. This bag should hold the most important items that YOU find it hard to get through a day without.

On your way to the gym? Warm to blistering day ahead? First and foremost, pack your favorite deodorant in travel size. Hit your local pharmacy, Target, or Walmart and have a good time picking from all the fun miniature sized grooming products for .99 cents each. You most likely can find a travel bag there too. Mother's Market carries an amazing organic body/deodorant spray by Avalon Organics in Rosemary and Peppermint. Keep a pack of face wipes handy, alcohol free, preferably chamomile based to refresh and cleanse the face as well as body, when needed. Most sunscreens offer travel sizes of their product like Banana Boat, or to "kill two birds with one stone", find a tinted moisturizer with spf 15 to 30 and even out your skin as well as protect it from the suns damaging rays. Tweezers! How many get in the car and at some point, wished they had tweezers to pluck away that stubborn chin hair that miraculously appeared out of no where! If your'e a makeup wearer, and somehow this daily ritual got interrupted, at least have a tube of water proof mascara and lip gloss stored in your bag for this very emergency. Lip glosses come in so many shapes, sizes, textures, flavors, and of course colors. So for every gloss type out there, there is an individual who is partial to what resides on their lips. Whether it be just a clear lip balm, a hint of pink, a mauvey-bronze, to a sassy red. Just keep it in a squeeze tube or wand format, just in case you leave this bag in a hot car, you don't have to worry about it melting. Stila offers a unique lip and cheek stain with the added sheer gloss, in a convenient twist-tube and seven yummy flavors and colors.

Now what about your hair? For long hair, simply keep a couple of hair ties/ rubber bands available to neatly or loosly tie the hair back. The third annual Makeup Show LA, if you haven't heard, was held at the downtown California Market Center, just this past weekend. Pro makeup artists, working artists, up and coming, to wannabe artists, came from near and far to catch a glimpse of the latest in cosmetic and supply trends within the industry. There were several booths catering to special effects and film makeup such as Make Up Forever, Graftobian, Mehron, and Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics to name a few. A perpetual query throughout this venue and among the cosmetic booths seemed to be the concern about HD(high definition/digital) ready makeup. "Is this makeup HD approved, certified, ready, appropriate, etc?"
What!?
High definition makeup has made its way to the forefront of the cosmetic world not only catering to the film industry but for the everyday makeup wearing woman(and man, Yves Saint Laurent L'Homme Touche Eclat). Within the past ten years makeup artists have been well aware of the need for this "finer", more perfected coverage. Since the introduction of HD and the quality imagery it provides the viewer, it was inevitable this would force the cosmetic industry to change the quality of how and what is applied to the skin and hair. High definition means we as the viewers see our actors six times as sharp as the previous, softer grained images, exposing more details, such as lines, wrinkles, skin imperfections, where basically makeup mistakes are more easily seen!
Pro makeup artists spoke on panels explaining their personal adaptations to this higher expectation for the flawless, unreadable makeup. For the everyday makeup wearer this has been the sought after dream product for decades!
Pro artists such as Ve Neill currently working on The Amazing Spiderman, Eryn Krueger Mekash of Glee, and Debbie Zollar from Mad Men, continued to explain whether how much more they carefully need to apply to actors and then there were some explaining how much less to apply. What was also expressed was the honest understanding that a makeup should be applied accordingly to what the situation demands. For example actor A who let's say has perfect skin, needs a natural makeup for a 40's era piece; give her the appropriate, flawless, undetectable finish with the accurate period styling of liner, rouging, and lip shaping. Then we have actor B who has level one acne, maybe an unwanted blemish square in the center of their forehead, requires special effects for an alien character where in "Quadrant 9", acneic skin doesn't exist. Now, the special effects pro can either use the blemishes to their advantage, or if smooth skin is a must, apply color and effects accordingly, then look to CGI(computer generated imagery) for the texture fix-ups. This is a given across the board, CGI is there to save the day when HD gets in the way!
Now just because we have CGI doesn't allow the artistry to relax just yet. The experienced artist knows the importance of accurate detail to the face and hair of their actor, along with the help of quality product, checking and double checking how it all looks on camera, and with the DP's approval, they then, maybe, can sit back and finally "take five".
High Definition may have taken away the subtleties, smoke screens, the veils that otherwise film provided the makeup artist with to hide imperfections, but todays experienced makeup artist must prove they actually can match the actors skin tone to the foundation, blend away the lines, and contours, and concentrate on those details in the looks they were hired to create, as this is also true for bridal, print, and video because across the board, the HD camera truly doesn't lie.

"I don't have a lot of money and time to spend on things that don't work."

-Before ever entering any store or salon, analyze your own skin concerns at home first. Do you find your skin more on the oily side, combination, dry, or even sensitive? Do you have five/ten/or 15 minutes at night and in the morning to apply these new products to your skin? Are you looking for organic products, fragrance free, lifting, firming, and or smoothing effects? Taking some or all of these into consideration will better prepare you when you find yourself bombarded by the sales people standing around throughout the department stores insisting that their products are perfect for you.

"I don't know where to begin when picking the right skin care for myself so how will I know if the sales girl knows what's best for me?"

-Ask them a questions first. Armor yourself with one or all of these questions that can give you a better idea if they truly know their stuff. "How long has this line been around?", "Who is the creator of the line?", "What is their philosophy behind it?", "What are the prime ingredients in your best selling product?" You will know right away if they can educate you or that they need to go back to the home office for a better education.

"Is it normal to break out after my facial or did they use the wrong products on me?"

-Most of the time when the skin specialist uses proper procedures and appropriate product for your skin type you should leave feeling and looking fresh, clear and clean with few or if any after effects. If your skin had quite a bit of extracting done and your therapist couldn't get to all your areas of concern, you may experience some "purging" in the next day or two. If you leave the salon with irritated skin, break out in more than two to three areas, or just don't feel your skin is as "rejuvenated" as expected, you should find out what the therapist used precisely on you, and let the management know as soon as possible.

"What do I do if I think they are not answering my questions?"

-To begin with, always enter the establishment well prepared with your questions and concerns. If you still feel like the sales person is eluding your concerns and more interested in pushing the line and it's products on you. Never feel pressured, you have every right to request another associates assistance who may better provide you with the information you need and/or ask for the managers help.

"Do I have to pay more for quality?"

-This is not all together true. But, you do need to do a little research. This day and age we have the luxury of the internet and most any service as well as product available, will have a review, articles, editorials, write ups, and testimonials to help weed out the not-so-goods. You can compare and contrast on the internet before you even step foot into a store or salon. When it comes to skin care there are so many levels of creams, lotions, gels, serums, moisturizers, nutraceuticals, etc. What's best for one skin type may not be best for another. But, if a certain eye cream or lift serum is difficult to keep in stock year after year, it must be doing something right. Always ask for samples for at least a weeks worth of trial. No skin care line should expect you to jump right on the bandwagon before you have even tested the product on your own skin. Know something about the ingredients and whether they are efficacious to your needs.

"Do I really need to layer on five different things on my face twice a day, everyday?!"

-Not necessarily so. If washing, toning, applying serum, eye cream, and moisturizer, are just too much work for one person, there are ways to simplify and still enjoy healthy nourished skin. You can use a soap-free,(non-foaming) face wash, to avoid the stripping of the skins natural PH balance where now toner wouldn't be as necessary. Finding a combined hydrating as well as vitamin enriched serum can take the place of a daily moisturizer, unless your main concern is overly dry skin, a medium to full moisturizer can be more beneficial for your skin than a serum. An eye cream unfortunately is a totally different entity to your face moisturizer. The skin and pores around your eyes and your lips is a lot more delicate and sensitive where heavy creams can clog and possibly cause milia. Eye creams are beneficial for both preventative as well as corrective purposes and specifically cater to these areas of concern.

There may come a time when you look in the mirror and wonder, "Where did those little brown spots come from?" This phase in your life, typically begins by the age of 30, where both women and men alike will experience their first "age spot". What is an age spot a.k.a. liver spot? They appear as light brown spots, hyperpigmentation, or patches, usually found atop the cheeks, nose ,forehead, chest, as well as the back of the hands. These unsightly blemishes are results of over exposure to UV rays from the sun, also known as "photo damage". Some may experience the opposite reaction to sun damage known as, hypopigmentation where the skin loses it's pigment in result causing the loss of melanin and the skin appears white. There are ways to prevent future age spotting and thankfully for the miracles of modern science and technology we have many options to the removal of age spots. There are several grades of treatment offered to the public all depending on ones determination on the removal of their hyperpigmentation. The most mild, easy to use, accessible to most anyone as well as affordable, is a pigment lightening cream or gel. Most commonly used in these over the counter products is hydroquinone. These treatments can be costly and as long as you've done your research and find a reputable dermatologist, expect positive results.

I'm not talking about the malls you drive a long distance to, for a discount on last seasons jeans and sweaters. I'm talking about a way to release your inner angst. A way to drop a few pounds and feel better about yourself inside and out.

Some find it with food, some with exercise, maybe it's sleep, or shopping, etc.
My beauty tip for this Tuesday is finding the positive "outlet" for todays stresses and pressures. I had a deep conversation with a close friend about this subject and we compared and contrasted peoples options in stress release. When someone feels out of control with a current situation they almost by nature feel the need to create a feeling of control in something else they think they "can" control. Eating and drinking are the quickest and easiest areas to appease ourselves with. "Treating" yourself or your friends to lunch or a cocktail gives a person a false sense of control and self worth.

BUT,what if you instead took a friend out for a hike around the lake, or to try out a new exercise program to work out your mind and body tensions?

Two years ago, I didn't notice my weight increase twenty five pounds over a good six to eight months of over indulging and taking friends out for wine and cheese tastings. I regularly went to the gym and kept fairly active with my two kids but the month before I was to go on vacation I pulled out the scale and just flipped in disbelief when I saw the numbers!

With the combination of counting calories and finding no more excuses in starting up kickboxing again (my favorite sport), I had no problems dropping that twenty five and another five on top of that in less than four months. My good friend has found walking in the mornings the most effective way to relax and drop her weight and she feels proud to talk about it.

Nothing makes someone feel more rewarded when they successfully accomplish a goal, nothing makes you feel more attractive when you lose weight, you worked so hard to lose, and no pair of shoes or dripping-fudge chocolate cake can make me feel as great as I do after I kick the crud out of my kick bag and sweat out my stresses during a vigorous hour of kickboxing! So find your sport, your "outlet". Get yourself moving for at least an hour, three to four times a week doing something you love and even better, do it with a friend!

Sat in on a little girls birthday party today. Watched them play makeup and have their nails painted. They dressed up and wore costume jewelery. Then I overheard the moms chime in how they would love to play beauty parlor and get their nails done too!
I offered to paint little pictures on the girls nails and glitter them up. What a sweet surprise to see them light up and get excited over the simple little things we can do.

Finding your "outlet"

I'm not talking about the malls you drive a long distance to, for a discount on last seasons jeans and sweaters. I'm talking about a way to release your inner angst.

Some find it with food, some with exercise, maybe it's sleep, or shopping, etc.
My beauty tip for this Tuesday is finding the positive "outlet" for todays stresses and pressures. I had a deep conversation with a close friend about this subject and we compared and contrasted peoples options in stress release. When someone feels out of control with a current situation they almost by nature feel the need to create a feeling of control in something else they think they "can" control. Eating and drinking are the quickest and easiest areas to appease ourselves with. "Treating" yourself or your friends to lunch or a cocktail gives a person a false sense of control and self worth.

BUT,what if you instead took a friend out for a hike around the lake, or to try out a new exercise program to work out your mind and body tensions?

Last year I didn't notice my weight increase twenty five pounds over a good six to eight months of over indulging and taking friends out for wine and cheese tastings. I regularly went to the gym and kept fairly active with my two kids but the month before I was to vacation in Hawaii I pulled out the scale and just flipped in disbelief when I saw the numbers!

With the combination of counting calories and finding no more excuses in starting up kickboxing again (my favorite sport), I had no problems dropping that twenty five and another five on top of that in less than four months. My good friend has found walking in the mornings the most effective way to relax and drop her weight and she feels proud to talk about it.
Nothing makes someone feel more rewarded when they successfully accomplish a goal, nothing makes you feel more attractive when you lose weight you worked so hard to lose, and no pair of shoes or dripping-fudge chocolate cake can make me feel as great as I do after I kick the crud out of my kick bag and sweat out my stresses during a vigorous hour of kickboxing!
So find your sport, your "outlet". Get yourself moving for at least an hour, three to four times a week doing something you love and even better, do it with a friend!

YUM! For the Confused!

Skin a little confused?

It may be Fall going on Winter, but for Californians it's raining one moment and then it's 90 degrees out, the next! It's no wonder our skin is so confused!

I stepped on the scale over one year ago.
Probably haven't made this attempt for a year before that.
As a working mother of two, in my mid thirties, I found myself at a plateau. I did my hour at the gym two to three days a week, PLUS I joined my sons karate school, and worked my way up to green belt.

Well, back to the scale.

I was preparing to go on vacation soon, to Hawaii, and knew I was going to probably be in a bathing suit most the time. I felt the scale was going to tell me how much harder I needed to work on myself before Hawaii comes.
Honestly, I thought maybe five or so pounds extra to lose, but oh how I was awakened! Twenty-five pounds OVERWEIGHT!
Thirty-five pounds over what I thought I actually weighed!
How off could I be? How long have I been lying to myself?
Forcing myself into jeans and skirts that I'm sure I was "muffin-topping"
and popping out of the seams. What was I thinking? Was I blaming the dryer?
Did I turn the "other-cheek" when I stepped out of the shower?
How did I not notice the seat belt squeezing my stomach in half every time I buckled up?
Well enough was enough!
I knew I had to make a serious effort and it wasn't only exercise, it was paying attention, CLOSE attention to what I put into my mouth.
I went on line and decided to do a little math. Challenging, but fun math. I insisted that I count EVERYTHING that goes in my mouth, count what might go in my mouth, like if I were on my way to a restaurant, and even measure everything I drank and ate to get a feel of how much I was really eating.
Now this might sound like "not fun", but I made this a challenge. A game per say.
It wasn't hard to do. Infact with my husbands help with his handy iphone, no matter where we were we could look up calories for anything with the help of The Daily plate.com. In no time I was in control of my food in take and still found the room for the things I really loved. Like, a refreshing drink with my girlfriends on the weekend, some dark chocolate here and there, and Yogurtland were all still on the menu. By simply removing the bread from my sandwich to enjoying egg whites and turkey in the morning I regained control of body and how I wanted to fit in my clothes. In one month I lost over ten pounds in six months I lost thirty five. I know how to keep it off and have found a new "habit" that will take me through the rest of my life!
The first step is taking that close look at yourself. See the signs. Don't make any excuses. Decide what it is you want from your body, and take control. It's both mental and physical but it's the spirit that truly prevails over all.

Makeup before working out?

There is more to this that stings the eyes:

I work out vigorously. I truly enjoy what I do.
I train in kick boxing as well as teach. Before this I frequented the gym two to four times
a week religiously since the age of eighteen. I am a mother of two and a lover of makeup as well.

Some ladies have approached me on this subject, and this is both a personal as well as professional opinion.

I consider myself "better off" with some sort of base/concealer on my face before I step out to go anywhere. This is something that shouldn't be even detectable gym or no gym. Just making sure there isn't any irritating ingredients that can harm the eyes because after a good sweat, it is inevitable foundation can seep into your eyes; and through experience, can be quite painful and just ends up ruining a good workout. I continuously wipe my face and chest, as I sweat, so my towel is going to reflect whatever is streaming off my face as well. I stick to water based tinted moisturizers and whatever hangs in there by the end of the work out is pretty much a miracle.

As for added touches like mascara, yes, why not, as long as it is waterproof and doesn't end up smudged under the eyes like a line backer. As for lipstick, probably not necessary but if you must, choose something sheer and neutral. A nice lip balm, or lip tint is fine, but keeping it natural, 'cause your'e just working out, right?
A workout for what it is, is not a time for glamming it up but we are out in the public eye, and if a little cover up and color makes you feel a little bit better about yourself, more power to you.

Now the time has come to interview makeup artists and hair stylists who will transform you and your day into your "Bridal Best". You want to still be you but the most beautiful you, you have ever imagined and you must trust this unto the talented and experienced hands of the right makeup artist and hair stylist.

Through experience, and seeing it time and time again, picking the same hair stylist to do makeup and vice versa is begging for a disaster. Stick with the specialists, especially on this most important day. A hair stylist "specializes" in up-dos, a makeup artist specializes, well, in makeup. It's understood that a cosmetologist is "licensed" in both but doesn't mean she/he works regularly doing both. More than likely if they are spending their days working with hair, it's hair they know. As for the makeup artist whom spends their day working with cosmetics, the many ranges of skin, face shapes, styles and trends that challenge them daily, it's safe to say it's makeup they know. It doesn't have to cost any more to have both a hair stylist and makeup artist. You pay for the job requested. You need your hair done(Price ranges of $75-$250), expect to pay for this service just as you would pay for the makeup service(Price ranges of $75-$250).

This brings us to the age old adage "You get what you pay for". And how true this is in the beauty/bridal industry. We all know as much as the next woman, how important your wedding day is and how much more importantly it is for you to look your very best. This is a rare and special moment you will be entrusting your face and hair to a specialist who is to create the most beautiful you which in turn presets one of your most precious memories throughout the rest of your life. EEgad, the pressure.

Don't you fret. Now here is why I am writing this blog. Have fun finding your makeup artist and hair stylist. Most of us know at least two people in our lives, as women, who we trust with our hair. If it isn't the lady who cuts your hair whom you think could style it as well, take a good look around the salon, ask to see someones portfolio, and set up some trial runs. Hair trials should cost a minimal amount($25-$65), and you should get what you want, If you don't , don't you dare settle. Move on, try again.

Make sure you give yourself plenty of time to search out the right talent months in advance so you don't end up frantic, stressed, or sounding too desperate to the artists. Do your best to get the makeup artist and hair stylist together on the same day so to see the completed look. Makeup artists can be found in department stores, salons, and independently. Again, insist on viewing a portfolio, and have a trial sitting($45-$75).

It's recommended you make appointments for your trials on a day you plan to go out and test out the wear of the hair and makeup. For example a bachelorette party, or engagement party. Take photos and ask loved ones what they honestly think.

Also a real important tool of communication in getting the message across of the kind of look you want; cut out, print out, tear out, photos, images, and styles you like from magazines and/or the Internet. With pictures sitting right in front of you and the artist there should be little room for misunderstandings. Give plenty of time for your trials, no more than two hours, try not to rush the artists if the look is intricate, like, your hair is long, or curly but you want straight, or fine but you want "BIG", etc.,etc.

In the end respect the expert, they want you to look your best, because in the end if you look good they look good.

Beauty Tip Tuesday:Awkward Makeup Moments

If you are a makeup wearer,
chances are you've had an
awkward makeup moment.

For example: I am an avid foundation wearer. Back in the early 90's I sported a silver ring upon each finger. I worked as an assistant sales manager for a womens professional suit and dress store and on this particular day I was helping a gentleman update his wifes wardrobe. Throughout the hour or two of coordinating separates with camis', and scarves, I didn't pay attention to a habit I had made in rubbing my ringed finger back and forth under my nose. After the gentleman had finished his purchase, thanked me for my assistance,and proceeded out the store, a fellow sales girl decides then to inform me that I had some black on my nose. When I looked in the dressing room mirrors I came to find a giant, very black "mustache" spread across my nostrils reaching cheek to cheek! Besides the annoying fact that no one tells me this sooner, did anyone know that silver rubbed against skin set with foundation turns the skin temporarily BLACK!? I learned this the hard way.
Another makeup faux pas was around the age of 23ish. I was managing a counter at Nordstroms, enjoying some of the perks working at the counter all day long, I would touch up my makeup through out the day sampling new products. On this particular day I chose a new glaze-like lip gloss that I was in love with. I think the entire day had gone by before I actually looked in a mirror and found to my horror a thick, glossy trail dripping from my bottom lip to under my chin! I couldn't feel it, and no one said ANYTHING! Note: Be aware of the long wearing effects of any and all cosmetics,(carry a mirrored compact and double check once in a while).;)

So enough about my past, it's really all about you.

You need to decide where, when, and why, you are going to wear a certain makeup. Is it for the entire day? Are you going for just dinner or out dancing afterward? Are your eyes going to end up more smudgy than smokey? Is this eye liner staying put through a vigorous run around the lake?, Is your hair going to get stuck in that gloss when you roll down the windows?, Are you sharing a lipstick-grin with those around you?, Are you sure your mascara is waterproof before you dive into the pool?, Is baby going to be grabbing at mommies bright red lips? Is your foundation going to end up on his suit lapel?,etc, etc.

Taking time out to think about the consequences of some of your makeup choices before you venture out the door tomorrow will save you an embarrassing makeup moment to come.

The "LOOK".

She is cool, she is natural, she lets it all just hang out! Layers not only with her clothing but with her hair and yes, her make-up.

The "natural look" takes some effort. Natural doesn't mean minimal, or no makeup. It means accentuating features in a way that looks like it was "effortless".

Foundation is definitely worn smooth and evenly. Liquid Airbrush foundations with spf 15 from Kevin Aucoin
is instant flawless in a bottle. All together a concealer highlighter and foundation in one.

Eyes are brought out with subtle highlighting just under the brow arch swept down to the inner corner of the eye. Choosing a crease color in a soft, warm taupe, yes warm taupe. It does exist. For example Satin taupe from MAC .
Blend softly from crease to outer corner down to lash line.(C-shadowing). Choose from a deep mocha brown liner to black depending on your own lash color. Smudge into lash line upper and lower lashes. NOT LOWER THAN LASHES. IN the lashes. This defines the lashes and the eye shape. Apply mascara to your liking. Waterproof or resistant preferred.(No smudges). Bronzer to contour cheeks, instead of a blush.(Bronzer softly blended under crease shadow is a nice effect as well).

Lips are soft, hydrated, shaped, and or stained with a fleshy natural hue. Begin with a Lip liner tone slightly deeper than your own color(I love Whirl from MAC). Blend softly from outer line and fill inward. Dab and fill with a neutral gloss or hydrating lipstick.(Love Lin from T.Le Clerc).

Brows! The brow is back. Like it was in 1985, thick, full and beautiful. No more thin strips of hair, it's Brooke Shields time! Orrrr, Jennifer Connelly time!

Workplace What to Wear

Some women have no problem picking which lipstick to wear in the morning but so many MORE struggle with "What shadow is appropriate to go with what liner?" and "Is this blush just too much?" let alone have the time to figure it all out before she's late getting to work.

With my 27 years of makeup wearing experience and my various employment background consisting of conservative suit salesgirl to visual display artist to cosmetic manager, event coordinator to shipping manager and the list goes on; I have had to apply the makeup accordingly. Now admittedly this wasn't a chore nor challenge for me but I have come across so many who have confessed that this is so for them.

Makeup doesn't mean you have to look like Tammy Fay or a drag queen by caking on the foundation, blush and mascara. In fact if one is a minimalist in the cosmetic realm think of it as protecting your skin with at least a sheer spf tinted moisturizer to even out the skin tone and provide needed everyday sun protection and hydration.
Everyone wants their eyes to stand out so there is no harm in sweeping on a light weight mascara to accentuate and comb the lashes naturally. Instead of blush pick a fleshy-bronzer to brighten and tone the face and decollete.(Even on the eye lids) Your'e almost done!
Add a sheer stain to the lips or a tinted lip balm and voila'! It's you. but "you'er"!
Well anyway, for the novice, the young, the wet behind the ears per say of cosmetics and skin care let us makeup loving and experienced show you the way.
Always begin with a skin care regime.
Basic yet essential for your very skin type.
Don't know your skin type?
Well, Are you breaking out? Does your skin become shiny all over within one hour of washing the face? Within a couple hours? At all? Just in the T-zone(nose, forehead, and chin)? Is your skin flaky? Dry? Sensitive? Does your skin react to fragrance? Get to know what makes your skin comfortable and what it reacts adversely to. For the oily and acneic skin types cleanse with a gel based foaming cleanser, anti bacterial, and soap free. Tone with a soothing alcohol free toner. Hydrate with a light weight serum and protect the skin with a hydrating lotion. Spf for the day.

If you are more combination dry and oily, wash in the same way, tone as well, find yourself a balancing serum to control sebum production and hydrate with a light weight protective moisturizer.
For the dry and sensitive wash with a cleansing milk, tone with a softening toner alcohol free, use a hydrating serum and a gentle fragrance free moisturizer to protect and seal in moisture. Spf for all skin types during the day.
Once your skin is prepped, picking the essentials for a quick and painless touch of color is your next step. Applying foundation isn't for everyone but I have always shared that by wearing foundation for me has saved my skin ten fold mostly because of the built in spf. It's saved me from painful sunburns and kept my skin well protected from the outside elements such as smoke, sun, drying winds etc.
Picking out shadows for the eyes can be grueling but with the right direction can make all the difference for the eye color and shape. Rule of thumb: no more than three shades on the lid. Accentuate eye color by picking the OPPOSITE tones from the eye color. Ie: If your'e blue eyed your complimentary colors are rust, copper, peach, warm mauves and cocoas. If your'e brown eyed your complimentary colors are cool mauves, lavender, amethyst, and purples. For green eyes your complimentary colors are eggplant, soft lavenders, burgundy, plums.
Mascara, even if your'e part camel, one can sweep a light weight mascara or if your'e like most women who want longer and thicker lashes, a thick dramatic black water resistant mascara to shape and accentuate the lashes.
Blush isn't for everyone. That's why God made bronzer! A natural warm sheer bronzer can sculpt and warm the face without the clown like effect a heavy handed rooky could create with a rosy blusher.
Lips should match the cheeks not the eyes. Important hint. If the cheeks are warm pick a warm lip tone and if cheeks are a cool pink pick a cool toned lip color. How dark one wears their lipstick is a personal preference, so is how shiny. Staining the lips with either a lip liner or a sheer lip stain can prevent the lips from feathering as well as provide more security for you in not having to worry about it coming off on your teeth, clothes, or smudging.

Never fear the fashion and beauty that comes with cosmetics. It's been said over and over behind every cosmetic counter, it's only makeup, you can always wipe it off, but when it's done right you will find your inner self woken up!

Summer time doesn't mean dry time

As Summer is knocking on the door, we are ready to shed the apparel, which means more skin to maintain. The heat turns up and we may find ourselves whether it's at the beach or the poolside, soaking up the rays, but drying out the skin doesn't have to be a concern. In fact while our natural perspiration cools and hydrates our skin, we produce more oil (sebum) as well. This is our bodies wonderful reaction to protecting and controlling our skins functions as we heat up. So, with that in mind, we can now ease up on moisturizers, switch to light weight spf lotions, and more sheer foundations. For the already oily prone skin types, this goes for you too, but keep blotting papers or translucent powder handy. There are some oil inhibiting serums out there as well to prep the skin in the mornings so no more fussing throughout the day with shine. (Check out Arbonne makeup primer, or Smashbox Anti shine). Positive thinking is attractive-

There is certainly something to be said about "The Secret", that is really no secret at all. By thinking positive about yourself, your health, and those around you, you can improve your overall well being.

Medical researchers have found links to the benefits of positive thought such as: Increased life span, decreased risk of depression, decreased stress levels, increased immunity, decreased risk of heart problems.

Let's take a good long look at ourselves in the mirror. Wash your face and pull the hair back. Stare at your eyes. Not at the lines around them, deep within your eyes. Smile. Don't look at your teeth and your gums, just your real smile. Step back, and look at your neck, shoulders, and the rest of your body. Keep smiling, a real smile. This is the person you are, whom everyone else sees everyday. The unique you that you are. When others see this person, think how much a difference you will make if you look at others with your smile, a positive impression, a better outlook of yourself and upon others.
Instead of spending too much time inside our head with scared and negative thoughts, that you may not realize reflects loudly outward to others. It shows through our eyes and our smile whether we want it to or not.

I made an observation a few weeks back while in Las Vegas. There couldn't be a better place, by the way, to people watch and see how they interact when looking for "companionship".
Something I noticed: A smiling, cheery woman, truly enjoying herself and opening up her mind to all that was going on around her, receiving constant attention from many men, attractive men to boot, and even other women on a friendly note. Then I watched a cloud of negative, bitter ladies, who kept their backs to most, spoke loudly and crudely, approached by fewer and quite unattractive, men. It was amazing to see the messages that were being sent out across a crowded club floor. Whether alcohol induced or not, we give off messages with our body language and most importantly with our eyes and smiles.
How beautiful a face can change when a happy thought envelopes the mind. The hundreds of muscles in our face are effected by stressors that can make all the difference in the shape of the lips, the height of the cheek bones, to the sweet curves around our eyes that can tell others whether we are feeling kind, angry, scared, sad, lonely, joyful, etc.

So the next time your'e "putting on your face", getting ready to meet new people, or even going on an interview, don't forget your positive thoughts, and take that close look at you once more and see how much more attractive you really are!
